KIMCHI DAY CELEBRATION

With more than 30% of the nation’s Korean American population residing in California, STATE SENATOR DAVE MIN (SD-37) hosted the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea YOON SANG-SOO, policy makers and community members for a series of events over two days.

On August 24, 2023, Senator Dave Min welcomed Consul General of the Republic of Korea in San Francisco Yoon Sang-Soo for a ceremony on the California State Senate Floor to introduce two measures that acknowledge Korean Americans:

  • Senate Concurrent Resolution 72 (SCR 72), celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Mutual Defense Treaty between the United States and the Republic of Korea.

Senate Resolution 45 (SR 45), declaring November 22, 2023 as Kimchi Day.

“No matter who you are, or where you come from, food has always held a special role in bringing communities closer together. As Vice Chair of the California API Legislative Caucus, I am so proud to introduce a resolution to celebrate Kimchi Day in the State of California. Kimchi is a staple of Korean cuisine, and like Korean-American culture, kimchi is spicy, intensely flavorful and good for your heart and soul. I look forward to celebrating Kimchi Day in the Golden State and want to thank all of our community partners for honoring Korea's unique culture and heritage.”

Fellow vice-chair of the Asian American Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus, Assemblymember Mike Fong (AD-49) also reintroduced House Resolution 55 (HR 55) to declare Kimchi Day in the Assembly.

In addition to the formal ceremonies, Senator Dave Min co-hosted a reception at the historic Stanford Mansion with a volunteer group. Over 100 people attended the reception, including nearly every member of the Asian American Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus. The program included remarks by Senator Min, Assemblymember. Fong and Deputy Consul General Kang Hyun-chul and featured a traditional Korean percussion performance by Changgo. Guests enjoyed traditional Korean food prepared by Blue House BBQ Chef Jinho Park. The event was sponsored by the Asian American Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus, Koreatown Youth and Community Center, Sage Strategies, Hanmi Bank, Tele 356, and Wang Globalnet.

“As a 2.0 Korean American, I am incredibly grateful for the leadership of Senator Min. For bringing more attention to the incredible contributions of our community - not only in food- but so many other sectors. With everything from K-pop to K-drama to K-beauty, I look forward to finding partners to continue to grow the presence of Korean Americans across the state, but especially in Sacramento.”
