Kimchi is a popular banchan which requires vegetables to undergo a fermentation process with different korean spices. Kimchi is high in dietary fiber and low in calories, but is also high in many different nutrients that can be beneficial for the body. Through the fermentation process, Kimchi produces high levels of vitamins such as Vitamin B complex and minerals that are very beneficial for the body.
Banchan are small side dishes served along with cooked rice in Korean cuisine. The dishes are set in the middle of the table to be shared. Served in small portions, Banchan is meant to be finished at each meal and replenished during the meal. Usually, the more formal the meals are, the more banchan there will be.
Korean Americans are the fifth-largest Asian American ethnic group in the United States, with a population of over 1.7 million and more than 500,000 Korean Americans in California alone. Korean is also the 5th most commonly spoken language in California.
Los Angeles as the largest Korean population in the United States with over 326,000 residents. The Koreatown in the City of Los Angeles is the largest Korean enclave in the United States. By 2020, Koreatown is known for having one of the largest concentrations of 24-hour businesses and restaurants in the country.
In the San Francisco Bay Area, Korean Americans are the sixth-largest Asian population, with approximately 90,000 KA residents, noting that in many parts of the Bay Area, AAPIs are the largest racial group, making up 34% of the population.
On June 25, 1950, North Korean Troops, backed by China and the Soviet Union, stormed across the 38th parallel, the line demarcation separating the Republic of Korea to the South and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the North. The United Nations Security Council authorized, for the first time, the formation of a multi-national force composed of mostly U.S. troops to repel further communist invasion from the north.
On April 26, 2023, President Yoon Suk Yeol joined President Joe Biden on the White house lawn to address the crowd at the 70th anniversary of the alliance and said, “The ROK-U.S. alliance was forged in blood as a result of our fight for freedom," he said. “The ROK-U.S. alliance is not a transactional relationship; it does not operate for the sake of mere interest. The ROK-U.S. alliance is an alliance of values, standing together to safeguard the universal value of freedom."
